welcome to squareone. lifestyle.  athletics. clothing. community. (pics courtesy Tyler Olson, Dain C. Zaffke, jurbanphotos.com)

Sometimes, we get so damn busy with working with athletes, building training programs, making new gear, throwing paper wads at each other and writing on things we shouldn’t write on, we forget to update this site as often as we should.

Fear not, we have a solution, but she ain’t ready yet.  When she is, you’ll be one of the first hundred people to know.

Our new sweatshirts, the ds Memorial, is out.  It honors a star among us who has passed, hence the star in the design.  They come in black and charcoal and are $60.

They rock.  Super cozy, super warm but somehow even super cool.  Place your order at teamsquareone@gmail.com and we’ll get it right out to you.  (Our store is funky right now, you didn’t expect all of this to be smooth, did you?)

We created an expo area and athlete lounge at the Desert Triathlon in Palm Desert.

We handed out donuts to our athletes … (and yes, that is Ironman World Champ Michellie Jones not being amused by our donut toss).

And took some podiums …

Then we went back to the Team’s sweet desert house ….

And won the party …

Thanks to Tyler Olson for his photo handiwork for the weekend.

We paid him in donuts.

We attach emotion to the products we design.  When we set out to create the new squareone cycling and tri gear, we looked far and wide for inspiration.  Then it dawned on us.  Dawn.  The rising sun.  Every time the sun comes up you get to start fresh.  You can proceed in that day any way you’d like.  Every time you pull our sq1 color banded cycle or tri kits on, just like a new day, it should remind you that you can go and do anything you want in life and make the most of the day.

Mimosas are on us. (read that again.  That’s a beautiful sentence) (till they last)  This place also has a brunch option, so go get your workout on and come by for brunch and some food.

AFTER the race wraps up …

We’ll talk about the planning of the race and touch on the aspects of training for this event.  From the time commitment to the physical and mental demands of training.  Come out, bring your questions, meet others who have signed up to go long with sq1.  We’ll do a brief overview of the training plan and have a question and answer with coaches and some of the boys who rocked the course last year.

Sunday Funday.  Can’t wait.

Gearing up ….

What’s up?

Summer is in full swing around here.  That means laying on the couch at 5 am and watching bike racing till it’s time to go to the office.

That means it’s getting closer to cyclocross season.

That means we have people headed to Sonoma to light up the Vineman 70.3 this weekend (and an AMAZING list, from 1st timers to goal setting super heros … remember to rock any and all sq1 gear in photos for prizes)

And we’ll also have MALIBU TRANSITION WORKSHOP THIS SATURDAY … happening at Zuma Beach in the north end of the parking lot.  If you want to learn about transitions, practice them or shave some seconds off your times, join us.  Free for all, we’ll have the bars set up (the transition bars, silly) and a real live transition area ready to go.  8 am, be there.  Bring your bike and run gear. (Nope, no Ocean Swim up there this week)

We’re sending a coach to further his coaching education with a Lactate and Power seminar this weekend.

NEXT WEEK … we’ll start Wednesday AM Group rides for all levels!  6.15 am at Ocean and San V.  More on that later, but set your alarms now.

cool like lemonade …

Like a refreshing glass of ice cold lemonade or a tip toe through the sprinklers on the neighbors lawn, sq1 is coming on this summer to offer fun refreshing things to tantalize your palette.

But first … congrats Kings!  Hopefully all this excitement in LA about the Stanley Cup has made a legion of new fans who now know how cool and vastly underrated Pro Hockey is. Being a hockey fan my whole life, it’s awesome to be in a city that just won Lord Stanley’s Cup.

Cool thing about winning The Cup?  Each player gets to have it for one day and do anything they want with it.  Here’s a kid from my hometown and his day with Stanley.

OK OK OK …

Onto Summer Events.  (but what would this website be without some non linear conversation, right?)

Here’s some things to think about  …  any questions on the below or if you wanna hop into one of these events with guides and coaches and people to train with, well, that’s what we’re here for!  Hit us over at teamsquareone@gmail.com and we’ll get you set up.

MALIBU TRIATHLON. Our Malibu Tri folks are training, are you?   We have a few people signed up and training already. Its an ocean swim, biking the portion of PCH we all have come to love (you can wave hello and goodbye to Encinal and Decker as you whizz by), and then a run along the beach. Not a bad Saturday (or Sunday) morning.

TOUGH MUDDER. Speaking of party, anyone who’s done a Tough Mudder has never been the same.  We kicked out the jams at one of these last year, and are queuing for another one in the fall.  Join fellow Sq1ers next month, July 8. It’s “probably the toughest event ON THE PLANET.” Designed by the likes of Bear Gyrlls British Special Force Opps, this race is a 10 mile walk in the park with a few obstacles to overcome. Ice baths, wall climbs, running through fire, you know, the usual kid friendly park stuff. “By running a Tough Mudder challenge, you’ll unlock a true sense of accomplishment, have a great time, and discover a camaraderie with your fellow participants that’s experienced all too rarely these days.”

GRAND FONDO. This is going to be an AWESOME event.  The organizers of the Giro (think of the Tour De France, but in Italy) are putting on TWO RIDES here in the States.  These rides are called Grand Fondos, and they are all the rage right now.  They can be anything you want them to be.  A competitive race, and ride with friends, or a mix of both.  They have distances and difficulty levels across the board.

AND … They are bringing one to Pasadena!  This will be an event not to miss.  Let’s get the band together and do this thing!

http://gfgiro.com/

10k TRAINING PLAN.  You want to get faster running?  10 K’s are perfect benchmarks and training platforms to launch more speed at all distances.  They start at the 10 K distance.  For the first time, we’re offering FREE 10K running plans.  Email teamsquareone@gmail.com and get yours today!

ongoing sq1 swims … this is the time of year to get in the pool, even with no races coming up!  We can slow the stroke down, work on form and technique.  Lanes aren’t crowded, the waters warm.  RSVP so we know you’re coming.

We have a whole bunch of Ironman stuff coming up too … stay tuned.

Again …. any questions or if you want guides and coaches and people to train with .. ready … GO!  teamsquareone@gmail.com

what we do.

Every once in a while we get asked the question … “What the hell are you guys doing over at squareone?”  And we answer …

Well, sq1 is different things for different people.

For Ivan and Noel De La Torre sq1 is an elite coaching company. We’ve been training them for speed by working their power meters on the bike as well as specific track and pool sessions geared for the goals we set for Ironman Couer de Alene. Wildflower was a tune up and test race for them, and the boys went 5.04 and 5.42 respectively.  We’re in a good spot.

For Jenny Simonson, Amanda Millan, Kara Hena, Kyle Green, and Natasha Brickner squareone was the launching pad into the world of triathlon.  As first time half Ironmaners, they trained hard and stayed on our custom built sessions and succeeded at this difficult race their first time out.  We’re hoping to see much more from this crew in the next year.

squareone is a place to build athletic prowess and confidence for Jason Ades, Sarah Scions and Matt Gregori.  This trio from different athletic backgrounds and with different times in mind, all set out on the Wildflower Olympic course and left it all out there.  Great finishes all around on a very hot day.

For Jen Reeve, David Smith, Sarah Craig, Katherine Eriksson and Kristi Johnson Wildflower is a preview of bigger things to come. Ironman Canada is around the corner and these veterans of Wildflower went into this race as a training block.  Lessons were learned, fitness was assessed, nutrition plans fine tuned and we’re moving on to bigger races later in the season.

squareone coach Arkady Hagopian is … well … a beast.  Racing Long on Saturday and the Oly on Sunday.  We’ve figured out how to do all three next season (adding the Mountain Bike race) and we’re going to goad Arkady into that challenge.

For Mitchell Price, Daniel Craig, Dash Nash, Adam Umber, Linda Herrera … sq1 is a community.  As a part of our volunteer staff  at Wildflower this weekend, their hard work and fun loving attitude made the race and the weekend.  This crowd trained hard for this weekend and won the party.  Hands down.

squareone is a project in combining athletic training, personal coaching and a community that is led by it’s members.  Driven so everyone – despite background, athleticism or financial means – has the same opportunity.  squareone is a feeling.  squareone is a family.  squareone is the revolution.

A huge thanks to ADAM UMBER and NATE BARILKA for the use of their photos.
